Spring is in the Air – and so are Allergies!
After a long winter, we’re finally seeing the first real signs of spring – longer days, more sunshine, and the first flowers blooming.
It’s a welcome change for many. But for some, spring also brings sneezing fits, itchy eyes, and a constant battle with tissues. If that sounds familiar, you might have a seasonal allergy like hay fever.
If you have spring allergies, your local pharmacy should be your first stop.
With the Pharmacy First scheme, pharmacists can give advice and recommend treatments without you needing to see a GP.
What Causes Spring Allergies?
Spring allergies happen when pollen from trees, grass, and weeds gets into the air. As temperatures rise, plants release pollen, which can trigger hay fever (also called allergic rhinitis). When you breathe in pollen, your immune system may overreact, causing symptoms like:
- Sneezing
- Runny or blocked nose
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Scratchy throat
- Feeling tired (yes, allergies can wear you out!)

How to Manage Spring Allergies
If you get spring allergies, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways to keep symptoms under control.
- Check the Pollen Forecast – Many weather apps show pollen levels. On high-pollen days, stay indoors when you can, especially in the morning and evening.
- Keep Windows Closed – As nice as fresh air is, open windows let pollen inside. Keep them shut to stop pollen from settling on furniture, bedding, and carpets.
- Shower and Change Clothes After Being Outside – Pollen sticks to hair, skin, and clothes. A quick shower and fresh clothes can help.
- Use Antihistamines or Nasal Sprays – Over-the-counter medications can reduce symptoms. Your pharmacist can help you find the right one.
- Wear Sunglasses – They protect your eyes from pollen and the sun.
- Try a Saline Rinse – A saline nasal spray or rinse can clear pollen from your nose and reduce congestion.
When to See Your GP
Most people manage hay fever with simple steps and pharmacy treatments. But if your symptoms are severe or don’t improve, contact us. You may need stronger medication or allergy shots to help build tolerance to pollen.
