Covid Spring Boosters: Who Needs One and How To Get it

A new covid booster campaign will launch soon to give added protection to those most at risk of getting seriously ill with covid.

The decision to offer spring boosters comes from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) and is based on how we can best live with covid without restrictions.

Here’s What You Need To Know

You can use the buttons below to jump to different sections or read through for the full information.

Who can get one

There are three distinct groups who will be offered the spring covid booster. They are:

  • Adults 75 and older (or will be 75 by 30th June 2023)
  • Adults living in care homes
  • Anyone 5 and older with a weakened immune system (defined in tables 3 and 4 from page 24 onward in the linked document.)

People in these categories will benefit the most from a booster vaccination as protection from previous jabs will decrease the quickest in these groups.

Why Boost

The latest data shows that nearly 9,000 people are currently in hospital with covid. It’s a reminder, should we need it, that covid has not gone away.

The boosters are a precautionary measure for people who are most at risk of getting seriously ill.

Since the launch of the vaccine programme in 2020, more than 151 million doses have been given in the UK, saving tens of thousands of lives and keeping even more out of hospital.

When

The spring booster campaign will begin in early April, and you will be contacted when it is your turn.

Please do not contact your GP practice to ask about booking covid vaccinations. You will be contacted by the NHS directly.

You will receive a text message from ‘NHSVaccine‘ or a letter in the post.

There should be a gap of 3-6 months from any previous covid vaccinations (first, second or other booster doses). If you have recently had covid, it is advisable to wait four weeks before booking a booster (or twelve weeks for those under 18).

Please note that the booster campaign will only run until 30th June 2023, as will the offer of a first or second dose for those who have not yet had them.

How to Book

When you are contacted by the NHS, you will be invited to book an appointment via the National Booking System, or by calling 119.
